Dear Friends,
The Livonia Public Schools School Board adopted Everyday Math in 2007 for grades K-4, and, however well-intended, this was clearly not the best program choice based on the newest and best information available. Currently, our school board is considering adopting Everyday Math for our 5th graders. They may vote on the matter as early as June 2, 2008.
Please make sure your voice is heard by contacting our Board of Education and sharing your experiences and thoughts about Everyday Math.

Facts About Everyday Math
Many of tomorrow's jobs will go to those with education and experience in science, engineering, health care, and to skilled technical workers. To compete, our children need a solid background in mathematics, regardless of whether they are headed for college or directly to the workforce.
Everyday Math and other similar “reform math” programs are failing our nation’s youth. Colleges and universities are seeing an alarming increase in the demand for remedial mathematics courses among entering freshman after more than a decade of reform math programs in our nation’s elementary and middle schools.
Parents across the U.S. have been begging school districts to drop programs like Everyday Math, as they watch their own children struggling and failing to get the proper foundation for higher level math. You can read more on these web sites:

Over 200+ of our nations top mathematicians from the best universities signed a letter urging the U.S. Department of Education to stop recommending reform math programs such as Everyday Math. See the letter here: http://www.mathematicallycorrect.com/riley.htm
The State of California has completely rejected Everyday Math and Texas has rejected particular portions of the Everyday Math program.
The National Math Advisory Panel Report, issued in March 2008, makes it clear that programs such as Everyday Math are lacking in focus and depth, spiraling from topic to topic without assuring mastery of standard operations. Read more here: http://www.ed.gov/about/bdscomm/list/mathpanel/index.html
Our 5th Graders should be focusing much of their attention on mastery of division and fractions, but Everyday Math completely skips long division and glosses over fractions, leaving many students completely unprepared for Algebra and beyond. Adopting this program for the 5th Grade would not be in the best interest of our children.
Please urge our LPS Board of Education to vote “no” on adopting Everyday Math for 5th Grade.
